Specifying Broadcast Audience

In this step, you configure who receives the broadcast. To add the audience or exclude it from the broadcast, you will use tags.

Using tags, you can both add existing audience (that is, the clients that already exist in edna and have those tags assigned for them) and upload a new list of clients, specifying in the process its tags and whether to include this audience in the broadcast or exclude it from it. Regardless, there are two default groups that you need to specify the settings for: group 1 for both Include clients in the broadcast and Exclude clients from the broadcast.

Group 1 (Include clients in the broadcast) – The audience that you want to include in the broadcast. Here, you add the tags of the audience you want to include in the broadcast.

Group 1 (Exclude clients from the broadcast) – The audience you want to exclude from the broadcast. This group has the Black list tag selected by default. The system assigns this tag to all clients you select the Do not send any messages to this client check box for on the Audience page, and you cannot remove this tag.

Once you select the audience for both groups, the system forms the list of recipients who will receive the broadcast (based on the tags added to the Include clients in the broadcast groups) and removes the clients that you want to exclude from the broadcast (based on the tags added to the Exclude clients from the broadcast groups). For example, you want to send the broadcast to all clients assigned with the Football tag, but you want to exclude the clients with the <18 system tag, so you add these tags to the respective groups. The configuration then will look similar to the following:

Based on such a configuration, even though a client has the Football tag, the system will still exclude them from the broadcast if they are younger than 18. Also, all the clients with the Black list tag (that is, they have the Do not send any messages to this client check box selected for them) will not receive the broadcast by default. For more examples, refer to the Examples of Broadcast Audience Configuration article.

In this step, you can also upload a list of clients by clicking Add clients. For the details of this process, refer to the Add Recipeints by Uploading List section of this article and in the Adding a List of Clients article.

Select Existing Clients as Recipients

  1. In the Edit broadcast > Broadcast audience section of the Broadcasts page, click anywhere in the group that you want to configure.
  2. Select the operator: And or Or. If you use And, the clients must be assigned with all tags that you select to be included in the group. If you use Or, the clients must be assigned with at least one tag that you select to be included in the group.
  3. In the tag tree on the left, select the tag(s) based on which you want to create the group.
  4. If necessary, add more groups by clicking Add another group. If the broadcast has more than one audience group of the same type, the system uses the Or operator for them when sending the broadcast.
  5. Click Save to save the draft or Continue to move to the next step.

Specify Audience by Uploading List of Clients

  1. In the Edit broadcast > Broadcast audience section of the Broadcasts page, click anywhere in the group that you want to configure.
  2. Click Add recipients.
Note that columns in the file that you upload must not have any headers, and one of them must contain recipients’ phone numbers. For other recommendations on how to form list of recipients, refer here.
  1. Click Attach file and select the required .xlsx or .xls list of audience (it can be both a list of the clients you want to send the broadcast to or a list of the clients you want to exclude from the broadcast).

  2. Click Upload.
  3. Assign variables to the columns in the uploaded list. You must assign the Phone variable to the column that contains the phone numbers of the recipients.

  4. Select tags for this audience, if necessary, or skip this step.

If you do not select tags yourself, the system will assign the uploaded audience with the file’s name, date, and time. This tag, as well as any other, will be then available in the list of tags.
  5. Select what you want to do with this audience: add it to the list of recipients of the broadcast or exclude it from the broadcast.

  6. Click Continue.

Depending on what option you selected in the previous step, the tag(s) you or the system assigned to this list will display in the corresponding group – either in Include clients in the broadcast, or in Exclude clients from the broadcast.

After you’re done specifying the audience of your broadcast, you can go to the next step – selecting its content.
